A quick start on Feng Shui and how simple it can be
Feng Shui is Actual Magic
What if the secret to improving your career is actually inside your home? And what if it only takes an hour or two to work actual magic? That’s what I’ve discovered, and the results are magical.
Today in The Alchemist’s Library, we’ll explore one of the most important feng shui areas of your home. And you’ll learn just how simple it is to work this ancient form of magic.
A Quick Story (Part 1)
I once found myself in a career rut. I wasn’t necessarily unhappy, but I wasn’t loving where I was or what I was doing.
I wasn’t up for the whole fill out 100 applications and go through a bunch of interviews and maybe get a new job. And maybe it would be an improvement.
So I decided to apply some simple feng shui magic to my career area.
What happened next was pure magic…. But I’ll get back to that in a minute. First, let me share the basics and simple steps I took to create the magic.
The Basics
In feng shui, a space (home, building, property, or room) is divided into a nine-square grid, called the bagua (pronounced bahh-gwah). Each of those 9 squares represents an area of life, from love and romance to career, health, and abundance.
The entire square is based on the location of your front door.

Feng shui is all about energy flow and intention. In feng shui, energy needs to flow freely in your home, just like in your body, or else you get pockets of stagnation / blocked energy.
The Importance of Your Front Door
Your front door is the entry of your home. It’s where all the energy (known as qi or chi) enters your home. The front door is known as the “mouth of qi”. Aside from it being where energy comes in, it’s also your career / work area.
If you have a bunch of junk by your front door (your career area), the energy coming into your home is messy and you're blocking free energy flow. Your career probably also suffers from the energy blockages.
Not Sure Which Door is Your Front Door?
Is the door you use designed to be the front door (by the building designers)? If you have to walk around your building to get to the door, but it's designed to BE the main / front entrance, that is considered your "front" door.
If you have a typical front door but use the back door instead, then you are accessing through a back door. Make sure both doors are clear. And use your front door at least occasionally to move the energy.

Working the Feng Shui Magic
The beauty of starting feng shui with your front door is that it’s a space you can transform quickly!
Step 1: Declutter
Remove everything from the space that doesn’t belong there. This includes the space right inside the door, outside the door, and next to or on the sides of the door. If you have clutter on your walkway to your door, clear that as well!
You should only have things in this area you really need or love. If you can’t get it to feel clear, re-consider everything you have in the area. What can be placed somewhere else? What really needs to be by the front door?
By my front door, we have our sets of keys hanging on a wall hanger, a corner shoe rack where we place shoes, a wallet, and the purse of the day. Outside the door, we have a welcome mat and a wreath. That’s it!
(Plants are great in any area, just make sure they don’t block the flow and they are healthy and kempt!)
Step 2: Tidy
The things you’ve decided to keep in this area should be placed there intentionally.
For now, just use what you have and make the space as neat as you can. If you want to get something cute to organize what you have there later, great! But don’t let that stall your progress right now. The whole point is to have a quick and simple transformation!
Step 3: Clean
Vacuum, sweep, mop. Wipe things down. Give your front door a nice wash, inside and out. Sweep your walkway.
Step 4: Check the Flow
Now, go to the beginning of your walkway. Walk to your front door. Then walk through your front door.
Is it easy to move along the walkway? Can you easily go in and out of your front door, without having to move anything? How does it all feel?
Does it feel clean, clear, open, and fresh?
If so, your magical work is done! It will not take long to see the fruits of this little bit of labor, my friend!
Storytime continued…
Without me doing anything different in my career or applying to any new jobs, a new job opportunity just appeared for me. I assessed and decided it was for me.
And soon enough, I had that new job, doing work I felt better about, in a better environment, and for wayyy more money!!
Bonus Tips
If you decide you want to apply extra magic to your career area (after you complete your simple steps above), here are a few feng shui decor tips.
In addition to each area of your home aligning with an area of life, each area has colors, a shape, and element, and symbolism associated with it.
For the career area, the colors are black and blue. The shape is “undulating”. The element is water. And the symbolism can be whatever symbolizes a successful career to you.
For inspiration, here are how we apply these things in our career area:
-
A black welcome mat with wavy shapes in it.
-
Wrought iron (and wood) shoe rack.
-
A piece of ocean art.
-
Dolphin figurine splashing up and out of water.
Symbolism
At one point, there was a ladder in this part of my home. Normally I’d put it away immediately. (Because clutter = bad feng shui!) Instead, I saw an opportunity. I decided to leave the ladder in the career section. But I stood it up (folded). Because to me, it symbolized “climbing the corporate ladder”.
Symbolism is the language of our subconscious. So any symbols relevant to an area that speak to you are excellent feng shui. Moving water symbolizes a moving career. A standing ladder and a dolphin jumping out of the water in the career section both symbolize upward career movement.
More Ways Front Door Feng Shui can Create Magic
Bonus! It’s not just about career—decluttering and cleaning your front door area can:
-
Improve the clear flow of energy in your whole home!
-
Bring clarity and focus to your goals.
-
Create unexpected opportunities.
Truly, just the act of walking through your front door with ease sends a subconscious signal: your life is flowing with ease and you are open to possibilities!
